On Emblem Island all are born knowing their fate. Their lifelines show the course of their life and an emblem dictates how they will spend it.
Twelve-year-old Tor Luna was born with a leadership emblem, just like his mother. But he hates his mark and is determined to choose a different path for himself. So, on the annual New Year’s Eve celebration, where Emblemites throw their wishes into a bonfire in the hopes of having them granted, Tor wishes for a different power.
The next morning Tor wakes up to discover a new marking on his skin…the symbol of a curse that has shortened his lifeline, giving him only a week before an untimely death. There is only one way to break the curse, and it requires a trip to the notorious Night Witch—who most believe is just a legend.
With only his village’s terrifying, ancient stories as a guide, and his two friends Engle and Melda by his side, Tor must travel across unpredictable Emblem Island, filled with wicked creatures he only knows through myths, in a race against his dwindling lifeline.
Meet the Characters
Tor Luna lives in Estrelle, a town surrounded by mountains like gates, and famed for its neighboring Sapphire Sea, filled with giant sea creatures. Born with a leadership emblem—like his mother, Chieftess of the village—Tor has had to train in skills such as public speaking, negotiations, and map-reading. But he hates all of it. Before school every morning, he sneaks to the ocean to swim, and wishes he had a different emblem. He plans to trade his power for another at the annual Eve celebration, a night where anyone can make a wish in the hopes of it being granted.
Grimelda Alexander is a born leader, like Tor, and is very happy about it. She uses her leadership skills daily, in class, and in helping her mother take care of her five brothers. Her most valuable possession is a family heirloom, a drop of magical color contained in a glass vial she wears around her neck. She is fiercely loyal, and works hard to help her family.
Engle is a sight-seer, an emblem that allows him to see extremely far distances, and even through objects if the conditions are right. He and Tor have been best friends for as long as they both can remember. His parents are almost never home, due to their jobs, so he spends much of his time at the Luna’s house, eating various emerald and sapphire-flavored desserts made by Tor’s father.
The Book of Cuentos is an ancient book of legends filled with deadly monsters, curses, and magic that once existed—and still might—on Emblem Island. Tor, Melda, and Engle must use these myths to find the mysterious Night Witch, the only person who can reverse their curse. In Emblem Island: Curse of the Night Witch, these legends are included between chapters, so you get a book within a book, and can make your own Book of Cuentos.
Discover Emblems
A person with this emblem can make potions that do all sorts of wonderful things, such as promote drowsiness, cure disease, or even melt enchantments. The extent of power depends on years of training and innate skill.
This marking allows someone to control time, making it pass slowly or quickly. It is unknown if any living Emblemite still possesses this ability.
An extremely rare power, a person with this emblem’s paintings come to life. Whatever they draw becomes real, so long as they have the tools to create. Tor, Engle, and Melda come across a person with this ability at an especially useful time.
The emblem Tor wants more than anything, this marking gives a person the power to breath underwater, meaning they can swim for however long they desire, exploring the strange and magical sea off of Estrelle, called Sapphire Sea because of its bright blue color.
A person with this marking can see extremely far distances, and even through objects when conditions are right. With training, they can also often see in the dark. This is a useful ability for the trio’s quest across Emblem Island, and is the power Engle was born with.
Telecorps can teleport anywhere on Emblem Island. It is a nightly coveted emblem that can lead to telecorps often hiding their marking.
Know-alls know everything within a geographical limit. Laurel, Estrelle’s know-all, is the first person Tor, Engle, and Melda go to for help after Tor has been cursed. Most know-all’s, given their extensive knowledge, are arrogant.
A person with this emblem has the power to freeze anything, from villains to beverages. It is increasingly common in the land of Frostflake, a village made completely of ice, where creatures created from snow come to life.
A rare variation of the leadership emblem, a person with this marking can control others with commands. The queen of Zeal, a city full of enchantments and wonder, has this emblem—and uses it to exert control over her kingdom.
A leadership emblem gives a person the traits necessary to lead a community, such as an exceptionally loud voice that inspires loyalty, problem-solving skills, and compassion. Tor Luna and Melda, two of the main characters of the Emblem Island series have this emblem, though they have two very different views on its importance.
A very rare emblem, this marking allows a person to speak to animals. It was one of the original emblems, in the time of Estrelle, the founder of Emblem Island and the subject of the first myth in The Book of Cuentos.
